GCC Standardization Organization (GSO) is a regional Organization which consists of the National Standards Bodies of GCC member States. One of GSO main functions is to issue Gulf Standards /Technical regulations through specialized technical committees (TCs).
GSO through the technical program of committee TC No (5) "Technical committee for standards of food and agriculture products" has updated the GSO Technical regulation No. : GSO 1417/20 "HAREES MOFALAK AND JAREESH" The Draft Technical regulation has been updated by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabai .
This Technical regulation has been approved by GSO Board of Directors in its meeting No.(….), held on …./…/…h (…/…/…), The approved standard will replace and supersede the standard No. GSO 1417/2013 .
This Standard applies to the basic requirements for harees , jareesh and Mofalak as defined herein.
2.1 GSO 328 " wheat Grains ".
2.2 GSO 382 " Maximum limits of pesticide residue in agricultural and food products ".
2.3 GSO 9 " Labeling of prepackaged foods ".
2.4 GSO 1016 " Microbiological limits in food and food stuff " .

3.1 Haress : whole wheat grains whose outer shells are partially removed by a maximum of 20% with a ratio of fraction passing sieve size (1 mm) set at levels no greater than 5%.
3.2 Jareesh : wheat grains whose outer shells are partially removed by a maximum of 20%, with a ratio of fraction passing sieve size (1 mm) set at levels no greater than 8%.
3.3 Mofalak: whole wheat grains broken into small pieces, and whose outer shells are partially removed by a maximum of 10%, with a ratio of fraction passing sieve size (1mm) set at levels no greater than 15%.
4.1 Harees, Jareesh and Mofalak vary according to wheat type. Hard wheat “durum" can be used.
5.1 Jareesh, Mofalak and Harees shall have a moisture content at levels no greater than 12 % .
5.2 Jareesh, Mofalak and Harees shall have a protein content at levels no less than 9 % on dry weight.
5.3 Jareesh, Mofalak and Harees shall not contain grains other than wheat.
5.4 The grains used, and the final product, shall be free from toxic grass seeds, rodents, birds and their droppings, insects and their metamorphosis.
5.5 Vestigial grains should not be more than 5%
5.6 The ratio of fraction passing sieve size (1mm) shall be set at levels no greater than 5% in Hareesh,
5.7 The ratio of fraction passing sieve size (1mm) shall be set at levels no greater than 8% in Jareesh
5.8 The ratio of fraction passing sieve size (1mm) shall be set at levels no greater than 15% in Mofalak,,
5.9 The product shall be free from extraneous smell or any signs of spoilage.
5.10 The product shall comply with the microbiological limits as specified in the GSO standards indicated in item 2.4.
5.11 The heavy metals and radioactivity limits permissible should be in accordance with the GSO standards indicated above in item 2.6.
5.12 The pesticide residues shall not exceed the permissible limits set at the GSO standards indicated above in item 2.2.
5.13 The rate of Claviceps pururea in grains shall not exceed 0.045%.
5.14 The percentage of bug damage in grains shall not exceed 0.5%.
Without prejudice to item 2.7, and 2.8 above, Jareesh, Mofalak and Harees must be packed in clean and sound packages which have never been used before and are suitable enough to maintain products’ quality and prevent contamination.
7.1 Transport
Without prejudice to item 2.11 above, Jareesh, Mofalak and Harees must be transported in clean conveyances suitable enough to maintain its properties and prevent mechanical contamination.
7.2 Without prejudice to item 2.9 above, Jareesh, Mofalak and Harees must be stored in clean well-ventilated facilities which keep the products away from direct sunlight.
Without prejudice to 2.3 above, the following must be clearly indicated on the label:
8.1. product's name as required by the regulations referred to above under item 3,
8.2. product's date of expiry as required by the regulations referred to above under item 2.5.
8.3 where applicable, that the product has undergone genetic modification.
